Alfred Cheney Johnston was one of the foremost if not THE foremost photographer of the Jazz Age. He came to prominance when he was hired by Flo Ziegfeld, producer of the Ziegfeld Follies to photograph his stars...The Ziegfeld Girls.

Cheney was given unprecedented access to a plethora of beautiful women performing on Broadway. Because he was creating the image of the "It" girl of the Art Deco Era, it wasn't long before the wealthy mavens of Manhatten were clamouring to have their portraits shot by Cheney as well.

Soon enough Hollywood came calling and hired Johnston to photograph the silent film stars of the day.

Alfred Cheney Johnston and his wife Doris had no children. Nearing the end of his life Johnston grew concerned about leaving a lasting legacy. And he did. He donated a collection of his still photographs, 245 images, to the Library Of Congress.
